Growing up in Liberia in the 1980s was, in many ways, like Hakuna Matata (Swahili for no worries). The adults in our lives had a remarkable way of making us feel safe, protected, and carefree, even when the world around us was anything but.
Looking back, I realize just how much was happening. There was a coup d’état, an attempted overthrow of the very president who had come to power through one, curfews that sent us rushing indoors before nightfall, and the unmistakable sounds of soldiers outside. Yet somehow, amid all that uncertainty, childhood still found a way. Milk candy and Sweet Mother became our little escapes, small joys that made the world feel normal.
Even with the tension surrounding us, my family created a sense of peace and security that allowed us to simply be children. That is the memory I hold close.
